Flag of the Wonderful Russia of the Future
A symbol of freedom and peace
What is the Flag of Free Russia?
The white-blue-white flag is a symbol of free Russia. This flag was coined by the online community opposed to the Russian army's invasion of Ukraine. The very next day after the first mention of it on Twitter, Russians abroad took to peaceful protests with a white-blue-white flag instead of the current Russian flag, stained with blood. This flag is the symbol of the peace movement.
Why is the new flag necessary?
The white-blue-red flag currently used by the government of the Russian Federation has become a symbol of blood, war and aggression throughout the world. We the people who do not support the authoritarian regime and the military, cannot use it anymore.
Why these colours?
There are several reasons for that.
The new flag is similar to the current Russian flag, but without the red stripe, a symbol of war and blood. We have replaced it with a white one because we strive for peace with Ukraine and demand respect for human rights in our state. The flag of free Russia defiantly refuses military expansion and rejects historical claims to the territories of foreign states. In Russia of the Future, there is no place for autocracy, militarism, the cult of violence and blood. We are opening a new page in the history of Russia —without the cult of war.
The white-blue-white flag resembles the flag of the Novgorod Republic and the modern symbolism of Veliky Novgorod. Historic Novgorod was the center of Northern Russia and possibly the only real democracy in the history of Russia.
The white-blue-white flag is similar to the white-red-white flag of free Belarus. We stand in solidarity with the people of Belarus, who are also fighting against illegitimate government.
The azure stripe was on the flag of Russia from 1991 to 1993 until it was replaced with an oversaturated blue colour.
White colour symbolises peace, purity and prudence, azure blue is for truth and justice.
The new flag is a symbol of the future Russia, which does not parasitise on the symbols of the past. The flag of free Russia is freed from associations with imperialism, militarism and authoritarian leaders of our country.
Are you trying to overthrow the regime?
No. White-blue-white is the flag of peace and freedom. Russians inside our country cannot participate in protests without risking income, freedom, health and life. Russians abroad want to express their anti-war stance and come out under a common banner that is not associated with the Putin regime. Ukrainians have a flag of Ukraine, Belarusians have a white-red-white flag, we have a white-blue-white one.
And what should I do with it now?
Use it. Use pictures below. Make posts on your social media. Make it userpics. Submit your photos and illustrations to be featured on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Draw and print posters. Sew the flag yourself. Go to rallies with it.

Who came up with all this?
The people. The idea of the new flag came to the mind of many people¹. The white-blue-white colour choice was offered as a symbol of the anti-war movement. This website was made by Mitia Morovov-Sheiner. Sonya Kachinskaya translated this website to English.
What shade of blue (azure) is right? And what proportions to use?
There is no answer to this question yet. This is the people’s flag. If your flag is recognizably white-azure-white, that's good enough.
I would recommend choosing shades that are significantly lighter than the current dark blue colour, closer to the azure of the 1991-1993 oficial flag.
For example, AssezJeune recommends blue #0083d6 and 2:3 proportions.
I recommend azure 1991-93 #088CE8 and proportions close to 1:2.
The details are up to you!
But I like the Russian flag and I don't want to change anything!
Well, just don't use the white-azure-white flag. Or use it as an anti-war movement symbol. This is not a national flag project. It is a symbol for bringing people together.
